The Sustainable Homes Program
In a national first,
Queensland’s Sustainable Homes
program is a collaborative
partnership between State and
local governments and key
housing industry stakeholders to
design and construct a series of
sustainable homes for public
display throughout Queensland.
The Queensland Minister for
Public Works, Housing and
Racing, Mr Robert Schwarten,
officially launched the
Sustainable Homes program in
July 2004 as an initiative of
the Year of the Built
Environment.
With around 20 homes to be
built, Queenslanders will be
able to see first-hand the
benefits of smart housing design
for their lifestyle, their
pocket and the environment –
both now and in the future.
These unique homes will provide
practical examples of dwellings
that integrate the triple bottom
line concept of
sustainability: environmental,
social, and economic
sustainability.
Sustainable Homes Program
Director Wayne Petrie said:
‘A key objective of this
initiative is to demonstrate and
promote the importance of
investing in sustainable design
at the household and community
level, in order to increase the
demand from homeowners,
builders, product suppliers and
developers for sustainable
practice'.
The program’s aim is to promote
more comfortable,
cost-effective, eco-efficient,
liveable and secure housing
suitable to local conditions
across Queensland.

Key objectives of
the Sustainable
Homes program are:
|
-
Demonstrate and
promote the
importance of
investment in
sustainable
design at the
household and
community level.
|
-
Increase the
demand from home
owners,
builders, and
developers for
sustainable
building
practices,
including
suitable
products and
materials.
|
Each display home will be
identified by the ‘Sustainable
Home’ title plus its locality,
for example Sustainable Home
Brisbane or Sustainable Home
Emerald. Following the
open-house period (minimum six
months) the homes will be sold.
Program Partners
Queensland’s Department of
Housing, Environmental
Protection Agency, and
Department of Public Works,
industry groups and local
councils will design, build, and
promote the sustainable homes
across Queensland.
