Greening Australia is an apolitical, not-for-profit membership-based organisation dedicated to managing and repairing native vegetation. Their guiding principles are based on economic, social, and ecological considerations. They do much more than simply plant trees.

Greening Australia tackles critical issues like salinity, declining water quality, soil degradation, climate change and biodiversity loss through an innovative blend of practical experience, science, community engagement and commitment.

They operate in 16 locations throughout Queensland and have more than 75 staff working in the organisation. In South East Queensland alone, they have more than 650 volunteers who dedicate their time for the work of Greening Australia.

The demand for their services continues to grow. The community, government, farming and business sectors are increasingly aware of the need for a fresh approach to natural resource management.

Bamboo is a renewable source that can be harvested every three to five years. The manufacturing process is non-toxic and waste free. Bamboo is hygienic and child-friendly, and a good choice for families dealing with allergies and asthma. Importantly, bamboo repels termites. Style Plantation (Jindalee Homemaker City) manager Kevin Bursnall says, ‘The price of bamboo compares well with timber. Bamboo costs about $125sq m compared with $110-250sq m for timber.’

Bamboo has a Janka (timber hardness scale) rating of 8.5, which is the same as jarrah. In comparison, red cedar’s Janka rating is 2.3, while brushbox is ranked the hardest at 9.5. Ecologically bamboo is one of the most environmentally friendly building materials available, according to Kevin.
